Marking 25 years of history, DrupalCon Chicago arrived at the peak of the AI disruption. The focus has shifted from accidental growth to the intentional leadership needed to transform how agencies and non-profits build for the future.

"Every year, DrupalCon brings the best kind of magic, brilliant talks, big ideas, and the buzz of the Drupal community." - Sarah Ferrara

DrupalCon Chicago was particularly significant as it marked the first global gathering since Drupal’s 25th anniversary. It was a moment to reflect on how the open-source community has evolved over a quarter-century, but the energy was focused firmly on the future.

We are currently in the middle of a massive technological disruption. The rise of AI tools is changing how we work together, and the impact on agency businesses is palpable. However, the Drupal community has navigated major technical shifts before.

The insights shared in Chicago and highlighted in the Driesnote focused on how agencies can transform their workflows to suit an AI-driven world better.

For DrupalFit, that week was all about exploring how these changes will help us build leaner, faster, and more effective digital experiences.

Here is the breakdown of our journey and the insights that will shape our work this year:

Day 1: Solving Real-World Problems at the Non-Profit Summit

For DrupalFit, the first day of DrupalCon Chicago was all about spending time at the Non-Profit Industry Summit, an event dedicated to helping mission-driven organizations navigate a complex digital landscape.

As a proud sponsor of the Non-Profit Summit, our team member, Yash Marwaha, took the stage to present “Accelerating Non-Profit Digital Impact with Drupal Site Template.”

Here’s what stood out from the DrupalCon Chicago session:

1. CareSphere: Missions Built for the Modern Web

The major highlight of our session was introducing the first non-profit template on the Drupal marketplace - Caresphere

We volunteered and contributed to this theme specifically to help non-profits launch new digital experiences with ease. It is a highly reusable, mission-centric template designed to help agencies get their stories out to the public effectively.

2. DrupalFit: 360-Degree Digital Health

The second half of our presentation focused on keeping a web presence healthy: compliance and maintenance. We introduced how DrupalFit provides a 360-degree view of a website’s health across SEO, accessibility, and security.

In a world where a website is the primary window to a mission, a healthy digital presence is exactly what inspires community trust.

However, we addressed the reality that for most non-profits, staying "healthy" feels impossible when juggling small teams and tight budgets. DrupalFit was built specifically to solve this resource gap, ensuring that high-level compliance doesn't require high-level overhead:

  1. No Expertise Required: With DrupalFit, organizations don’t need an in-house expert to stay compliant.
  2. Digestible Reports: We provide clear, actionable insights that tell you exactly what the issue is and how to fix it.
  3. Efficiency: We’ll handle the maintenance work for you with as little effort as possible, freeing up teams to focus on their actual work.

The discussions extended beyond the stage, covering management, security, and accessibility. We explored how non-profits are reaching people in low-connectivity or high-risk regions through SMS and low-memory devices, highlighting that true digital impact means meeting users where they are.

Day 2: AI Integration and the Decoupled Revolution

Day 2 shifted the focus from specific industry summits to the foundational future of the platform. The conversations at DrupalCon Chicago revolved around two major themes: AI-augmented development and the evolution of the Drupal CMS (formerly known as Starshot).

The Vision: Dries’ Keynote and the "Starshot" Momentum

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the Driesnote. Dries opened with a rare look back at the platform’s origins. He shared his journey as a PhD student who started Drupal as a small side project, managing it by simply emailing lists of known issues to a handful of interested contributors.

It began as a way to solve technical problems for a small group, which eventually turned Dries into what he calls an "accidental leader." However, over the last twenty-five years, that role has transformed.

He discussed his evolution into an "intentional leader," driven by a specific motto and a disciplined approach to problem-solving. This shift from reactive maintenance to intentional innovation is exactly what has allowed Drupal to thrive for over a quarter-century while other platforms have faded.

He also addressed the "elephant in the room": the flood of AI-generated "average" content that is currently saturating the web. Dries conveyed in his session: "Use AI to prototype fast, then use Drupal to build systems that last."

He made a powerful distinction between tools that can spin up a pretty prototype in 15 minutes, and the structured, governed systems required by serious organizations.

Dries unveiled Drupal CMS 2.1 and introduced the Drupal Marketplace, where site templates, including our own work in the non-profit sector, are becoming central to the user experience.

The keynote featured demonstrations of how AI can transform unstructured documents into production-ready pages and how agents can monitor site performance and suggest real-time optimizations based on competitive data.

Also, Aiden Foster joined the stage to discuss the shift in agency strategy, emphasizing that the value in the AI era comes from human creativity, strategy, and judgment rather than just production.

During the keynote, a stern message was delivered regarding "AI slop" in contributions, urging the community to respect maintainers' time and maintain high quality in open-source contributions.

The most impressive moment was the demo of Drupal Canvas AI. Dries showed how a site could be built from a single prompt, but then crucially, rebuilt into a structured, editable system using the new Canvas CLI.

Yash’s Perspective on the Vision

The Driesnote was a validation of the work we are doing at DrupalFit. Dries’ vision for Drupal CMS and the new AI-powered page building experience is a game-changer. It’s moving Drupal from being a tool for developers to a platform for 'ambitious site builders' without losing the technical depth we need.

Day 3: A keynote on the Security Implications of AI

If Day 2 was about high-level vision, Day 3 was about the human connections that turn that vision into reality. The final day of the main conference sessions in Chicago was a blend of high-stakes security discussions, technical deep dives into Drupal Canvas, and most importantly, the chance to reconnect in person with the partners and clients we serve every day.

Navigating the Global AI Landscape

The morning kicked off with a powerful keynote by Alexandra Bell, who explored the broader security implications of AI. It was a sobering but necessary look at how the tools we build impact global security and ethics.

For a team like DrupalFit, where handling sensitive data for non-profits and enterprises is already a core responsibility, this session validated our 'Security First' philosophy and further refined our protocols for AI integration.

The Value of Connection

Day 3 was the most rewarding part of our trip. Between sessions, our team spent time in the halls and at the "Coffee Exchange," catching up with long-term partners and meeting new ones.

One highlight was a series of scheduled meetups with our existing clients who were also attending the Con.

"Meeting our client MMGY in person at DrupalCon is invaluable. We were able to sit down and look at the new Drupal CMS roadmap together, showing them exactly how the 'Starshot' features we discussed in the Driesnote will solve their specific content bottlenecks by next year." - Yash Marwaha
